Fact Dominican Republic is the unique place in the world where a blue amber is found. Local jewelries production just has no value in sense of art – turtles, hearts, dolphins, you know. But yes, you can buy an uncut stone and bring it to your own jeweler. 30 US$ for a 30g piece in a mine near Yasica Abajo, north of Dominican Republic, near Puerto Plata.  Remember, it «glows» only if a certain percentage of the area is covered with metal or something else. Well, the jewelers know that. It can also be found in the South of country - Los Cacaos, Palo Alto, and the South-East part – El Valle. According to rumors, Dominican Republic produces about 300 pounds of amber per month (5% - blue amber). Is regulated by the Ministry of Mining, miners are united in cooperatives. Therefore one of the frequent saying is: "Si Dios quiere", which means "If God wants" and "Si Dios permite" - "If God permits." What should be answered "yes, he will, hurry up!"  Fact «Sancocho». This delicious national dish, made of different (just all known) types of meat. Here below I will leave a brief recipe of typical dominican Sancocho. First of all, you will need to cut meat in a small pieces, than cover it with a lemon juice. Use a big pan for a beef, adding garlic, cilantro and oregano. A little bit of salt, no more than 1 spoon. Leave it for 1 hour at least.  1. Heat the oil, using a big frying pan. 2. Add beef and cook it (at high t°) during the next 15 minutes. 3. Now you can add the pork, and stew it for 10 minutes. Please don't forget to add some water (half a cup) preventing the burning. 4. Add 2 quarts of water to the pot and bring to a boil. Add the name, auyama, yautia and the two plantains that you had previously cut. Simmer covered for 15 minutes. 5. Scrape with the knife the remaining plantain to make it into a pulp, add to the pot. Add all remaining ingredients (minus the salt) and add water as it becomes necessary to maintain the same level. Stir regularly to avoid excessive sticking. 6. Simmer until the last ingredients you added are cooked through. 7. Season with salt to taste. Serve hot with white rice, slices of avocado and garnish with hot sauce or agrio de naranja 1 lb beef for stews flank, chuck, or round 1 lb goat meat 1 lb pork sausage longaniza 1 lb pork for stews belly, or chump end 1 lb chicken 1 lb pork ribs 1 lb bones from a smoked ham Juice of two limes 1 tsp cilantro or parsley chopped 1/2 tsp oregano powdered 1 tsp garlic mashed 1 1/2 tsp salt 4 tbsp oil corn, peanut, or canola 2.5 quart water [2.5 lt] 1/2 lb yam name cut into 1-inch pieces [0.23 kg] 1/2 lb West Indies pumpkin auyama cut into 1-inch pieces [0.23 kg] 1/2 lb taro yautia cut into 1-inch pieces [0.23 kg] 3 unripe plantains 2 cut into 1-inch pieces 1/2 lb cassava cut into 1-inch pieces [0.23 kg] 2 corn cobs cut into 1/2-inch slices, optional Recipe from Dominican Cooking, Sancocho, thanx! Traditionally eaten with lemon and chilly sauce. The best place to eat your Sancoho Santo Domingo - Adrian Tropical restaurant (any of 4 branches) but I will particularly recommend that one on George Washington with a caribbean sea view. Local «mofongo» is strongly recommended too. Must eat! El Limon city, Peninsula Samana – «Santi» Restaurant. This guy knows about cooking da best «Santi Sancocho», belive me. He also own a rancho where El Limon famous Waterfall can be seen during a short horse voyage. Caribbean Pirate Style, Must see же! A little bit of history. Dominican World Record The world biggest sancocho was made here in Dominican Republic on February 12, 2007. After 5 hours of cooking in a 4 meter bowl, 3000 servings were. 11 cooks, 300 lb of beef, 250 lb of pork, 150 chicken, 500 bananas, 300 yuccas and seasonings. Fact Whales in Samana Bay. From the middle of January till the end of March, or longer sometimes... Meanwhile we are importing from Venezuela. The government actively implements solar panels and windmills, the state supports autonomous citizens, independent of the country electricity. The second deposit - province of Altagracia, seeps directly to the surface. It is not yet clear how rational is to extract, but the research is going. Fact. Difficult to find a homeless cats, a lot of dogs – yes, but just no cats. The dogs can be divided into 2 breed types. For example «Pitt Bull» and «Pitt Bull raza pura». In both cases, it's a some kind of hybrid of Something with Something with Pit Bull. However the veterinary passport will say the breed declared by owner. Fact. The national bird of Dominican Republic is Cigua Palmera, flower – West Indian Mahogany (Swietenia Mahagon).   Fact Sea cows are found here in Dominican Republic. You see them in front of El Portillo airport in Las Terrenas, in Monte Cristi (Northern coast, near Haiti border), coast of Barahona also. Calm and friendly enough, they have nothing against a near approach. But any sharp movement can scare them. While diving near Las Terrenas shore, I met them once... something unforgettable.  Some sources claim there are only 70 cows left in Dominican Republic. Long-term hunting pushed this unfortunate creature to the brink of extinction. Until now, there are still idiots who continue engaging in dirty poaching. According to the same idiots manatee meat has 7 different tastes. And the bone of manatee, sadly, is used for jewelry.  Fact One of the largest salt lakes in the world, the crocodile Lake Enriquillo has about 400 specimens of American crocodile, with total area of 370 square kilometers. One crocodile per square kilometer. The "salinity" level is 8 times more than the Caribbean Sea.  Some time ago, after the hurricane Katrin, the lake decently spilled, changing salinity, and a lot of blue crabs appeared on the northern shore. Do you know how fast they were caught? 1 crab per minute. Instead of nets, the locals were using a fan cover with piece of cow leather. Cooking it right there, with coconut milk and wild herbs... Delicious!  Fact People sacredly believe in lottery. I`ve seen places with no «colmados», but yes, you'll be surprised finding 2 or probably 3 «Bancas» who sell the sweet-dream-opportunity to catch the real cash, bro, you know. Banca = lottery.
